Merchants Fleet’s FleetShare operation in Puerto Rico launched September 14 with 113 managed vehicles for an unnamed global e-commerce customer, the company said in its October 20 announcement. It is the platform’s first deployment outside the continental United States. [1]
FleetShare combines driver profiles, connected key boxes and reservations so authorized drivers can access assigned vehicles without a manual key handoff. Managers can see assignments, expected returns and availability, including vehicles held out of circulation. The company reports more than 8,000 managed vehicles across over 225 locations. [1]
Merchants says the platform works independently of a customer’s Wi-Fi network. That describes its design, not verified connectivity at every site. BTO has not independently tested the system. [1]
Merchants describes the Puerto Rico deployment as part of a system intended for last-mile delivery, field service, utilities and shared vehicle pools. It also says FleetShare complements its maintenance, registration, telematics and assessment services, with connections to everyday tools such as Outlook and Gmail. [1]
On its separate product page, the company describes time-based reservations, centralized usage reports and allocation of vehicle costs to accounts or departments. Drivers reserve a vehicle for a specified period, while managers monitor the pool through a dashboard. These are advertised platform capabilities; the Puerto Rico release does not demonstrate which configurations that customer uses or quantify the resulting savings. [2]
When shared trucks need a better handoff
BTO analysisThe useful distinction is between having the keys and having a truck ready for work. A reservation needs to connect the right driver with a vehicle that has returned, passed inspection and is available for the next assignment.
For a single truck with one regular driver, a clear key-control and inspection routine may solve the problem. Shared shifts or multiple locations create a different coordination task. Before pricing software, identify the recurring failures: missing keys, conflicting bookings, delayed returns or uncertainty about damage. Those are concrete problems against which to judge a system.
Ask for a demonstration of your actual handoff process, including a late return, a vehicle taken out of service and a driver whose access must be removed. Get written answers on support hours, connectivity, outage access and exporting assignment records. The announcement does not explain every exception.
Time-based booking adds a planning question beyond simply assigning a truck. The next reservation depends on a realistic return time, time to inspect or refuel, and a process for reporting that the vehicle is unavailable. A reservation record and a condition record should tell the same operational story before the next driver starts.
Cost allocation is another distinction from a basic key box. A fleet sharing vehicles between teams may need to know which work used a vehicle and for how long. A one-truck operation may already know that without another system. The relevant comparison is the administrative problem being solved, including the time required to maintain driver profiles and accurate vehicle records.
What remains unresolved: The release does not name the customer, disclose public pricing, identify the Puerto Rico vehicle mix or report measured savings from the deployment. Do not assume all 113 vehicles are box trucks or cargo vans. Compare the full quote with coordination costs you can document; the announcement is not a contractor recruiting offer.
